Assembling with the help of the video guide is the recommended method to reduce questions or issues with assembly.



Preassembly Tips and Advice

  • If you are uncomfortable with bike mechanics, it is best to have it assembled by a bike shop or expert.
  • Remove ONLY the packing zip ties, taking care not to cut any wires, cables, or zip ties used to route wires.
  • Avoid touching the brake rotors with your fingers. The natural oil present on your hands will contaminate the rotors, reduce braking efficacy, and create a loud whine when braking.
  • Apply grease to the seat post before installation.



Derailleur Guard Installation Video

 On recent editions of the Portola, the bicycle comes with a derailleur guard. This can help avoid the derailleur hanger getting bent from minor impacts. The following video goes over how to install this piece if it is not already installed on your sample.


 






Assembly Basics

  • In the Portola Assembly video at timestamp 1:29 you are instructed to remove the silver packaging spacer. In some early production bikes, the factory installed a second black packaging spacer - RED (this is different than the larger black headset spacer - GREEN). This will also need to be removed and set aside (you will not need this packaging spacer

  • Cable Routing
    - Before installing your handlebar stem, inspect the wire and cable routing and match the orientation as shown in the video. The wires should not cross over or you will damage the electrical components of your new bike.


  • Handlebars & Stem

    - You will need to install the stem and handlebars before use. The display and throttle will be on the left side (without chainring) and the shifter on the right side (with chainring). Tighten the stem bolt to 5nm, then check for proper front wheel alignment. Once aligned, fully tighten to 7nm.
    - Using the 5mm hex wrench, alternate tightening the two headset bolts until both are equally tight and ensure there is no play in the fork.

  • Brake Levers

    - The levers should be facing forward and angled slightly towards the ground to comfortably squeeze them while maintaining good grip and control on the handlebars while riding. This can be adjusted later on to suit personal preference.


Changing Class Settings

  • The Portola will arrive out-of-the-box in Class 2. To change the classes, hold both the DOWN and POWER buttons for 2 seconds. Doing so will allow you to cycle through C1, C2, and C3 class settings.
    - Class 1 (C1): top speed of 20mph with pedal assist only. The throttle will be inactive in this class setting.
    - Class 2 (C2): top speed of 20mph with both pedal assist and throttle.
    - Class 3 (C3): top speed of 28mph with pedal assist and 20 mph with throttle.



Post Assembly Tuning and Safety Check

  • Index your derailleur and verify the hanger is straight

    - Failure to index your derailleur and set the limit screws may cause damage to your rear wheel, motor cable, motor, derailleur, or derailleur hanger.

  • Ensure your brakes are adjusted and bedded

    - Brake calipers may need to be adjusted to perform up to specification. Note that new brake pads need to go through the bedding process and may make noise when braking until bedded.

  • Double-check your cable routing

    - Matching cable routing as shown in the assembly video will reduce stress on wiring and avoid out-of-warranty damage to your ebike components

  • Adjust your fenders

    - Rubbing fenders is common. Adjusting your fenders will ensure no noise or tire contact during operation.

  • Portola Battery

    -  The battery can be charged on or off the bike. To partially release the battery, gently turn the key. To fully remove the battery gently rotate the battery latch to the left or right to release it.
