There may come a time for the need to remove of the rear wheel on the Prodigy V2 with the Enviolo Internally Geared CVT Hub. While this is theoretically more involved than removing the rear wheel of a standard bicycle with a chain and cassette, it is very straightforward and only adds a few minutes to the removal and reinstallation of the rear wheel. Use the below steps when changing rear wheel flats and other maintenance on the bicycle. The only tool required is an open end 15mm wrench, which needs to be carried along with your flat tire repair kit.

Step 1: Prep the Bicycle

Start by removing the battery and flipping the bicycle upside down, using care to protect the handlebar controls such as the display module, shifter, and brake levers. During a roadside flat repair we recommend moving the bicycle to a flat, grassy area. If this is not available you will want to loosen the handlebar controls and rotate them out of the way. Shift the bicycle into the hardest resistance level (the white gear display will show the bicyclist climbing a hill) and put the kickstand into the "down" position.

On the back side of the shift module you will notice two cable barrel adjusters. The one closest to the front of the bicycle (#1) controls the cable tension for the cable with the pull tab on the hub itself (see second picture). The barrel adjuster closest to the rider (#2) controls the cable tension for the cable with the cylindrical lock nut on the hub. It is not necessary to adjust #2 for rear wheel removal. Rotating these cable adjusters clockwise loosens cable tension, while rotating them counterclockwise adds cable tension. Loosen barrel adjuster #1 by 5-10 turns, and remember this number during reinstallation, you will need to tighten it back to original tension.  


Step 2: Remove cable tabs from hub

Lift cable tab #1 and pull it out of its notch. Then, rotate the plastic hub component to remove cable nut #2. 


Step 3: Loosen axle nuts and remove wheel

Use a 15mm open ended wrench to loosen the axle nuts. Completely removing them is not necessary, and take care to note the orientation of the anti-rotation torque nuts.

Pull the wheel out of the dropouts with one hand while guiding the belt off of the cog and set the wheel aside. You are now ready to complete your flat repair. 


Step 4: Reinstallation of rear wheel

Reversing the task in step 3, reinsert the rear wheel into the dropouts while guiding the belt onto the cog. There is a spine on the inside of the belt that gets centered onto the cog, so there isn't an opportunity to misalign the belt on the cog and front sprocket. If the axle rotated during the flat repair, rotate it so that the anti-rotation torque washers are properly oriented. Once the wheel is evenly seated in the dropouts, tighten each axle nut.


Step 5: Reinsert cable tabs

Reinsert the cable tabs onto the hub. Take care to be sure each on goes into the proper spot while making sure cable housing is seat both at the hub and the gear shifter. Start with the cylindrical cable nut, which wraps about the hub from the top side of the bike.

Pull cable tab #1 so that the cable is taught and maneuver it into the notch. Once it is evenly seated, the tab gets pushed flat against the housing, covering cable tab #2. Refer to each of these photos (above and below) to ensure proper location of the cable tabs.

Once each cable tab is seated in the hub, tighten cable barrel adjuster #1 by 4 turns, as we loosened it during step 1.


Addendum: adjusting the rear fender

If your bike arrived with the rear fender shifted to one side, or during your Prodigy V2 ownership you ever require this, the below steps can be followed. The rear wheel needs to be removed to do this adjustment.


Step 1: loosen both rear rack bolts 


Step 2: level the rack

Next, we're going to push the rack "down" (with the bike flipped upside down, we're really shifting the rack up). For demonstrative purposes, we've removed a bolt to show the elongation in the hole on the rack. We need both rack support arms to be at the same location so that the rack is level. If you'd like to bring the fender closer to the tire, you are welcome to find the sweet spot in the elongated hole. Once the rack is leveled, retighten bolts.


Step 3: install rear wheel and check for evenness

Reinstall the rear wheel without securing axle bolts or shift cables to be sure the fender is even. If it is not, continue to Step 4.


Step 4 (if necessary): loosen rear-most fender bolt

If the first two steps do not resolve the issue, the fender likely shifted at its mounting point to the rear fender. Loosen the rear-most bolt and shift the fender as necessary. Be sure the two rack support arm bolts are tight during this process. Once the fender is centered, retighten bolts.
